Concerto da Camera, a candidate for the Grand Prix France Hong Kong, has produced an exceptional documentary during the pandemic in Hong Kong about the restoration of ancient pianos. Its director Karen Kwok looks back on this enriching experience that eventually brought French and Hong Kong cultures closer together.

"We had to adapt the pandemic with more creativity"

How did the idea of Sound of Chopin emerge?

In 2021 fall for the 2d Hong Kong Early Music Festival, Concerto da Camera was supposed to present some live concerts in Hong Kong. Due to the pandemic situation, the idea of filming a documentary on antique piano restoration with the expert Olivier Fadini in France, as we were very impressed by his work and wanted to share it with our Hong Kong audience. Mr. Fadini had a collection of 19th century Pleyel pianos in his atelier waiting to be restored. Those pianos, in spite of their poor condition, had helped bring the sound of Chopin to us. We believed a restorer’s quest to help those pianos continue their journey down history was an important story that had to be told.

"We had to improvise due to unexpected time delays"

Which difficulties did you face?

A major difficulty we had faced during the process of making the documentary was time. As we had to respect the availability of our interviewees, we had less flexibility in organising our shooting schedule. We had to be adaptable and ready to improvise. Another problem was COVID-19. There were a couple of times when one of our crew member was tested positive just before the shoot and we had to postpone everything. Consequently, the interviews we did for the project were dispersed over a period of five, six months. We had to catch up with time during the last month of post-production.

What satisfactions did you get from the project? What made you particularly proud?

As musicians, we love giving concerts and performing music, but we have always wanted to dive deeper into the historical and cultural context of the music as well. This project was a fulfillment of such an ambition. We stepped out of our comfort zone, pushed our limits and achieved a result that is better than what we had in mind.

There are debates in the musical world about their techniques and methodologies. By expanding the project from just filming one piano restorer, to including the views of a musicologist and two pianists, we are able to give a more comprehensive presentation on the topic. The very fact that we made a documentary on such an uncommon topic is gratifying. On the other hand, this project had been a marvelous journey of exploring the French culture. And most important of all, we made many friends.

"Music definitely appeals to meditation"

How did the audience in Hong Kong welcome this documentary about France and music instrument restoration?

The reactions of the Hong Kong audience can be roughly divided into two categories. One of the professional musicians, the other of the general public. For the musicians, they were particularly amazed by the French craftmanship, and how the tradition of music instrument restoration has been kept well and alive to this day. For example, they marvelled at the use of a garlic clove for making the wood more sticky, at the restorer’s minutest examinations on the material of the hammer felt, and at the artists’ relentless search for the “perfect” sound.  As for the audience who were non-musicians, what attracted them most was the artists’ pursuit for the sound. Suddenly, their ears were opened, they listened more closely, and they found that they could relate the essence of restoration to other aspects of their life. Some said the experience was like meditation!

What are the learnings and positive outcomes of your initiative?

The Hong Kong/France exchange is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of this project. We feel we had let more French people learn about the spirit of Hong Kong while bringing a piece of the French ingenuity back to show our Hong Kong audience. We’ve fostered appreciation and understanding between the two people.
