« Je me suis rendu compte finalement, que d’être coiffeur, c’était bien plus que ça ! »
Raconte-nous un petit peu ton parcours
Je suis arrivé en 2012 à Hong Kong, après être passé par Paris, puis Pékin. Je suis né à Ho Chi Minh et je suis parti à mes 14 ans en France. A 18 ans, j’ai décidé de me former dans la mode mais je me suis rendu compte que finalement ce n’était pas pour moi.
J’ai décidé de retourner au Vietnam où j’ai fait une rencontre qui changera ma vie. Je suis parti me faire couper les cheveux dans un salon puis j’ai décidé de me recoiffer seul après la séance. Le coiffeur m’a observé et m’a dit « Tu as un don, tu as quelque chose dans les doigts. Tu devrais retourner en France et te former dans la coiffure !
J’ai alors écouté son conseil et je suis retourné en France, où j’ai obtenu un CAP en métiers de la coiffure. Je me suis donc retrouvé dans la coiffure du jour au lendemain. Je n’avais jamais imaginé que couper les cheveux toute la journée puisse être intéressant… et je me suis rendu compte finalement, que d’être coiffeur, c’était bien plus que ça !
Suite à cela, j’ai travaillé dans des salons prestigieux à Paris tels que Massato Paris et Jean-Marc Mamitas, puis je suis parti une année à Pékin. Après cette expérience en plein cœur de la Chine, j’ai décidé de déménager à Hong Kong en 2012.

Tell us a little bit about your background
I arrived in Hong Kong in 2012, after having lived in Paris and Beijing. I was born in Ho Chi Minh and moved to France when I was 14. At 18, I decided to train in fashion, but I realized that it was not for me.
I decided to go back to Vietnam where I met someone one will change my life. I went to a salon to get my hair cut and then decided to do it myself after the session. The hairdresser looked at me and said "You have a gift, you have something in your fingers. You should go back to France and train as a hairdresser!
I took his advice and went back to France, where I obtained a diploma in hairdressing. I found myself in hairdressing from one day to the next. I had never imagined that cutting hair all day could be interesting... and I finally realized that being a hairdresser was much more than that!
After that, I worked in prestigious salons in Paris such as Massato Paris and Jean-Marc Mamitas, then I went to Beijing for a year. After this experience in the heart of China, I decided to move to Hong Kong in 2012.

Lorsque nous l’avions rencontré en octobre 2020, il était manager d’un salon de coiffure japonais/international sur Central et maitrisait déjà 4 langues, le français, le mandarin, l’anglais, le vietnamien, et s’initiait au cantonais.
En novembre 2021, Doan a décidé d’ouvrir son propre salon. Explique-nous le concept de ton nouveau salon de coiffure, Le Rendez-Vous.
A Hong Kong, le coiffeur a une place spéciale dans la communauté française. Les Français aiment aller chez les médecins français, dentistes français, et les coiffeurs français ! J’avais l’impression d’être important pour la communauté française.
En novembre 2021, j’ai donc ouvert mon salon collaboratif « Le Rendez-Vous » situé sur Central, malgré le Covid. Le but de ce concept « collaboratif » est de favoriser les échanges et les rencontres. Je souhaitais un lieu qui me correspond. Au sein du « Le Rendez-Vous », j’accueille différents artistes : coiffeurs, esthéticiens (manucures, pédicures, soins du visage, tatouage, ongles…), artistes peintres et autres artistes. Je collabore également avec des entreprises vendant et exposant des produits de soins, de beauté et capillaires, à chaque fois avec des produits qui respectent l’environnement. Plusieurs artistes viennent travailler pour les clients et proposent leurs prestations. Les artistes peintres viennent exposer leurs œuvres d’art pour faire connaître leurs tableaux et ainsi les vendre. Des événements sont prévus tels que les « Lady Nights » pour permettre à des femmes de se rencontrer, autour d’un verre par exemple et d’échanger entre elles.
Et sans oublier, je propose mes prestations pour des coupes de cheveux, des couleurs, des soins et autres.

When we met him in October 2020, he was a manager of a Japanese/international hair salon in Central and already mastered 4 languages, French, Mandarin, English, Vietnamese, and was learning Cantonese.
In November 2021, Doan decided to open his own salon. Tell us about the concept of your new hair salon, Le Rendez-Vous. In Hong Kong, the hairdresser has a special place in the French community. French people like to go to French doctors, French dentists, and French hairdressers! I felt like I was important to the French community.
In November 2021, I opened my collaborative salon "Le Rendez-Vous" located in Central, despite the Covid. The goal of this "collaborative" concept is to encourage exchanges and meetings. I wanted a place that corresponded to me. Within "Le Rendez-Vous", I welcome different artists: hairdressers, beauticians (manicures, pedicures, facials, tattoos, nails...), painters and other artists. I also collaborate with companies selling and exhibiting care, beauty and hair products, always with products that respect the environment. Several artists come to work for clients and offer their services. The painters come to exhibit their artworks to make their paintings known and thus sell them. Events are planned such as the "Lady Nights" to allow women to meet around a drink for example, and to exchange between them.
And last but not least, I offer my services for haircuts, color, care and others.
Comment as-tu eu l’idée d’ouvrir un salon collaboratif réunissant plusieurs artistes ?
Le salon accueille différents collaborateurs. J’ai eu l’idée de travailler en collaboration avec des coiffeurs, des artistes peintres, et avec d’autres marques.
- Je suis coiffeur avant tout et travailler dans un salon « classique » avec des horaires à respecter peut-être fatigant. J’ai voulu un endroit où nous avons plus de liberté, nous contrôlons notre planning et notre temps en fonction de nos rendez-vous. En tant que fondateur, je connais le planning de mes collaborateurs, mais ils sont libres de choisir leurs horaires. De plus, avec le Covid, il y a eu beaucoup moins de travail à un moment donné… Si nous travaillions dans un salon « classique », nous aurions été obligés de rester toute la journée dans le salon à attendre… Avec ce concept, nous sommes libres de venir et de partir quand on veut.
- Pour les artistes peintres, par exemple, l’idée m’est venue assez simplement. Je m’intéresse beaucoup à l’art et j’ai plusieurs amis artistes. Je les accompagne dans les Pop-Up de galeries d’art. Et je me suis dit qu’il fallait que l’on puisse s’entraider entre artistes. J’ai alors décidé de collaborer avec des artistes et cela me plaît : cela permet aux clients de connaitre des artistes. De plus, nous changeons d’artistes tous les 2 ou 3 mois, cela permet de décorer différemment et régulièrement le salon et d’apporter sans cesse du renouveau.
- Pour les autres collaborations, comme les espadrilles, les bougies, les produits de soins et autres, j’ai eu l’idée grâce à ma mère. Elle avait un magasin de prêt-à-porter au Vietnam lorsque j’étais plus jeune. Elle faisait venir des produits de marques françaises pour les revendre. Cela fonctionnait à merveille. Puis elle a commencé à travailler en collaboration avec d’autres partenaires sur place, pour diverses marques. Pour ma mère, cela a marché alors pourquoi pas moi ?
J’adore travailler avec de nouvelles personnes, d’avoir de nouvelles collaborations. D’autres idées se développent au fur et a mesure.
How did you come up with the idea of opening a collaborative salon with several artists?
The salon hosts different collaborators. I had the idea to work in collaboration with hairdressers, painters, and other brands.
- I'm a hairdresser first and foremost and working in a "classic" salon with strict schedules to maintain can be tiring. I wanted a place where we have more freedom, we control our schedule and our time according to our appointments. As the founder, I know my employees' schedules, but they are free to choose their own hours. Also, with Covid, there was a lot less work... If we were working in a "classic" salon, we would have been forced to stay all day in the salon waiting for rare clients... With this concept, we are free to come and go whenever we want.
- For the painters, for example, the idea came quite simply. I am very interested in art, and I have several artist friends. I often go with them to art gallery pop-ups. And I said to myself that it was necessary that between artists we could help each other. I have therefore decided to collaborate with artists and I like it: it allows customers to know new artists. Moreover, we change artists every 2/3 months, it allows us to decorate the salon differently and regularly and to constantly bring renewal.
- For the other collaborations, like espadrilles, candles, care products and others, I got the idea thanks to my mother. She had a ready-to-wear store in Vietnam when I was younger. She used to bring in products from French brands in order to resell them. It worked perfectly. Then she started to work with other partners in Vietnam, for various brands. For my mother, it worked, so why not for me?
I love working with new people, having new collaborations. Other ideas are developing as we go along.

Quelles ont été les difficultés pour l’ouverture de ce salon en novembre 2021 ?
En novembre 2021, quand j’ai repris ce salon, tout était ouvert sur Hong Kong. Je pensais que le Covid était derrière nous, je ne m’attendais pas à ce que nous subissions une 5ème vague de Covid aussi intense avec toutes les restrictions mises en place pour y faire face. Nous avons dû fermer le salon de coiffure pendant 28 jours… Beaucoup d’expatriés (notre clientèle) ont eu peur, et beaucoup d’entre eux sont partis temporairement ou définitivement en début d’année 2022. Le plus dur pour nous, c’était de perdre une partie importante de notre clientèle.
A l’heure actuelle, tout va mieux, Hong Kong est redevenue une ville ouverte et nous retrouvons le sourire. L’équipe s’est agrandie et les clients reviennent. Les clients ont l’air d’adorer le concept, car on ne fait pas que de la coiffure, les clients viennent pour « vivre une expérience » en découvrant de nouvelles marques, des tableaux, des bougies et autres. Ils viennent pour avoir une prestation personnalisée, avec des conseils et des avis de professionnels.

What were the challenges in opening this salon in November 2021?
In November 2021, when I took over this salon, everything was open in Hong Kong. I thought Covid was behind us, so I did not expect that we would go through such an intense 5th wave of Covid with all the related restrictions. We had to close the hair salon for 28 days... Many expatriates (our clients) were afraid, and many left temporarily or permanently in early 2022. The hardest thing for us was to lose a significant part of our clients.
Now that everything is going better with Hong Kong reopening, we are smiling again. The team has grown and the clients are coming back. The customers seem to love the concept, because we do not just do hairdressing, the customers come to "live an experience" by discovering new brands, paintings, candles, and others and to have a personalized service, with advice and opinions of professionals.
