Ecouter du jazz en live à Bombay, ça vous parle ? Où et quand me répondrez-vous ! Oui, des soirées à découvrir un groupe, tout en dégustant un verre dans un cadre sympa, n’est pas monnaie courante dans the maximum city.

Créer un lien entre l’Europe et l’Inde au travers de la musique avec un zoom particulier sur le jazz, c’est pourtant le pari que s’est lancée Emmanuelle De Decker fondatrice de Gatecrash.

En 2012, après avoir travaillé pour l’Alliance Française de Calcutta, puis pour le Blue Frog (établissement fermé aujourd’hui, considéré comme l’une des premières salles de concerts de musique non Bollywood en Inde), Emmanuelle monte Gatecrash. Son agence d’organisation d’événements musicaux se charge de la programmation d’artistes principalement européens dans les grandes villes indiennes.

Le Color Me Pink festival à Jodhpur, le festival de Jazz de Calcutta, la programmation de live dans des clubs de Bombay et de Delhi, … Gatecrash, c’est en moyenne 15 à 20 tournées d’artistes étrangers par an. Connue pour son expertise dans le jazz, l’agence totalement indépendante met aussi un point d’honneur à ce que l’on retrouve des touches variées et hétéroclites de musique dans ses programmations. « On a par exemple déjà programmé Laxmi Bomb. Parfois, c’est des touches hip hop, parfois de l'afro jazz, bref un type de jazz riche et accessible. »

Au-delà du volet « programmation et tournée », Gatecrash se veut aussi être un outil pour démocratiser le jazz en Inde et un vecteur de lien entre la France / l’Europe et l’Inde. Avec le temps, l’agence a ainsi développé une communauté jazz en Inde et espère pouvoir, à l’avenir faire venir des artistes indiens sur le vieux continent.

Passionnée par le jazz et convaincue de la force de la musique pour faire bouger les lignes, l’agence a monté « Music Mulakatein » ; une facette sociale en lien avec son activité ! « On organise des concerts, au sein de bidonvilles et d’hôpitaux. L’objectif est de rassembler autour de la musique, de créer du lien et de faire vivre un moment inédit à ces communautés qui n’ont pour la plupart pas accès à la culture », explique la fondatrice.

Fort du succès de ces événements, Emmanuelle et son équipe ont souhaité aller plus loin. Depuis un an et demi, l’agence travaille ainsi, à la création d’une formation professionnalisante proposée à des jeunes filles de l’ONG Kranti.

Durant trois mois à mi-temps, quatre indiennes d’une vingtaine d’années, ont ainsi monté un concert et été formées à la gestion de projet.

Afin d’officialiser et de développer les formations, l’ONG de Gatecrash a d’ailleurs été enregistrée en Inde quelques jours avant le confinement. Au vu de la situation, les formations et les concerts de l’ONG ont été suspendus, laissant place, à une campagne de collecte de fonds. Lancée à la demande d’artistes étrangers venus en Inde, l'opération a permis de récolter près de 8000 € en quelques semaines qui ont été répartis entre quatre ONG locales bien connues de Gatecrash (Kranti, Apnalaya, Corp India, Purnata).

Face à ce succès et pour faciliter les transactions financières au profit de l’ONG entre les deux pays, le pendant français de Music Mulakatein vient d’être enregistré à la préfecture de Pantin (Seine-Saint Denis).

Listening to live jazz in Bombay, does that tickle your fancy? But, where and when?

Creating a link between Europe and India through music with a particular focus on jazz, this is the gamble that Emmanuelle De Decker, founder of Gatecrash, has taken on.

In 2012, after having worked for the Alliance Française du Bengale, then for Blue Frog (an establishment closed today, considered one of the first non-Bollywood music concert halls in India), Emmanuelle set up Gatecrash. Its musical events agency is responsible for programming artists mainly from Europe in major Indian cities.

The Jodpur festival, the Calcutta Jazz festival, live programming in clubs in Bombay and Delhi,… Gatecrash, organises on average 15 to 20 foreign artists tours a year. Known for its expertise in jazz, the totally independent agency also makes it a point of honor to find various and motley touches of music in its programming. “For example, we have already programmed Laxmi Bomb. Sometimes it's hip hop touches, sometimes it's afro jazz, in short, it’s a rich and accessible type of jazz. "

Beyond the "programming and tour" component, the mission of Gatecrash is also to be a tool for democratization of jazz in India and a way to build a link between France / Europe and India. Since its genesis, the agency has thus developed a jazz community in India and hopes to be able to bring Indian artists to the old continent in the future.

Passionate about jazz and convinced of the power of music to move things, Emmanuelle has set up "Music Mulakatein"; a social organisation linked to the activity of Gatecrash! “We organize concerts in slums and hospitals. The goal is to bring people together around music, to create links and bring a unique moment to these communities, which for the most part do not have access to culture, ”explains the founder.

Building on the success of these events, Emmanuelle and her team wanted to go further. For the past year and a half, the agency has been working to create professional training offered to young girls from the NGO Kranti.

During a part-time three-month project, four Indian women in their twenties organised a concert and were trained in project management.

In order to formalize and develop the training, the Gatecrash NGO was registered a few days before the lockdown. Currently, the NGO’s training sessions and concerts are suspended and the NGO has started a fundraising campaign. Launched at the request of foreign artists who came to India, nearly € 8,000 were collected in a few weeks and were distributed between four local NGOs well-known by Gatecrash (Kranti, Apnalaya, Corp India, Purnata).

Empowered by this success and to facilitate financial transactions for the benefit of the NGO, between the two countries, the French counterpart of Music Mulakatein has just been registered at the prefecture of Pantin (Seine-Saint Denis), in France.
