Gweilo (Re-run) by Pants Theatre Production The Rite of Passage of a Golden Boy in Colonial Hong Kong
Even though the colonial period came to end in 1997, Hong Kong’s past has undoubtedly shaped this place into the beloved city that we all know. Pants Theatre Production’s 2016 production Gweilo, a mesmerizing bilingual solo performance adapted from British writer Martin Booth’s bestselling memoir, told the tale of the British colonial Hong Kong through the lens of a seven-year-old golden boy.

Its debut was selected as one of the programmes of the 10th Chinese Drama Festival and received great acclaim. The show had a rerun in 2018 to full house too. This September, Gweilo is returning with 6 performances to share with audiences the colonial way of living of Hong Kong in the 1950s and 60s.
“Gweilo” is a Cantonese slang that refers to the Westerners as “ghost man”. This derogatory term has been used by Guangdong people since the 19th century. However, it is so commonly used that the offensiveness is losing. Nowadays, this term is even embraced by local foreigners themselves.
Martin Booth’s memoir Gweilo is very popular among the expatriates in Hong Kong. Martin recalled his vivid childhood memory since 1950s, when Martin’s British navy officer father brought the whole family to Hong Kong. Director Hoi-Fai Wu is deeply touched by the novel. Together with the French-Finnish actor Micah Sandt, they adapted this fascinating memoir into a one-man drama with music.
Produced by Pants Theatre Production, Gweilo (Re-run) will be staged from 15 to 24 September 2023 at the Theatre of Sheung Wan Civic Centre. It will be performed in English and Cantonese with Chinese and English surtitles. Tickets priced at $350 and $280 will be available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk) and art-mate (www.art-mate.net).
